The Best Way to Store Your Belongings at Valencia Self Storage

Storage units at Valencia Self Storage in Valencia, CA

Whether you’re downsizing, in the middle of a move, or just need extra space during a home renovation, a storage unit gives you room to breathe. The difference between a unit that works and one that becomes a source of frustration usually comes down to how you set it up. Here’s how to do it right.

Pack smart before you arrive

Use uniform box sizes when possible — they stack cleanly and you waste less vertical space. Label every box on the side, not the top. When boxes are stacked, you’ll read the sides.

Heavy items go in small boxes. Light items go in large boxes. Simple rule, easy to forget.

Wrap fragile items individually and don’t leave air pockets in boxes. A half-filled box compresses and collapses under weight. Fill gaps with packing paper, bubble wrap, or even clean towels and clothes.

Protect what matters most

Some items need more than a standard unit. Climate-controlled storage is worth it for:

  • Wood furniture (warps and cracks in heat)
  • Electronics and appliances
  • Artwork, photographs, and documents
  • Clothing, fabric, and leather items
  • Vinyl records and media

The Santa Clarita Valley gets hot — often over 100°F in summer. A climate-controlled unit keeps temperatures consistent year-round. For everything else, a standard drive-up unit does the job.

Map your unit before you fill it

Put items you’ll need access to near the front. Leave a center aisle so you can reach the back without unloading half the unit to find one box. This step is easy to skip and you’ll regret it every single time you visit.

Disassemble furniture where you can. A bed frame flat against the wall takes a fraction of the space it would standing assembled. Dressers can hold boxes inside the drawers — use that space.

Use vertical space

Stack shelving units against the walls and build up, not just out. Most storage units have 8–10 feet of clearance. Most people fill them to about waist height and leave the rest empty. Freestanding wire shelves from any hardware store can nearly double your usable space.

Lock it right

Our units come with individual alarms — every unit has its own, not just the perimeter. For the lock itself, use a disc lock or a shrouded shackle lock. They’re significantly harder to cut or pry than a standard padlock.
