Maximizing Your Storage Experience — Expert Tips from Valencia Self Storage

Storage units at Valencia Self Storage in Valencia, CA

Renting a storage unit is the easy part. Getting real use out of it — that takes a little planning. After years of helping customers at our Valencia and Castaic locations, we’ve picked up a few things that separate a storage unit that works from one that becomes a black hole for stuff you’ll never find again.

Start with a floor plan

Before you move a single box in, think about how you’ll use the space. If you’re storing furniture during a renovation, that’s different from a unit you’ll access every couple of weeks for business inventory. Map out what goes where based on how often you’ll need it — not just how it fits.

Items you’ll grab regularly belong near the door. Everything else can go deeper in. This sounds obvious until you’re three months in and your holiday decorations are behind a sectional sofa.

Use vertical space

Most units have 8 to 10 feet of clearance. Most people fill them about waist-high and call it done. That’s leaving half your storage on the table.

Sturdy wire shelving units are inexpensive and transform a standard unit. You can stack boxes on top of each other without worrying about crushing the bottom ones, and you can actually see what’s on each shelf.

Protect your stuff the right way

A few things people consistently get wrong:

  • Plastic bags on fabric — moisture traps inside and causes mildew. Use breathable cotton covers for furniture and clothing.
  • Newspaper for wrapping dishes — it works but the ink transfers. Use unprinted packing paper or dish sacks.
  • Leaning mirrors and artwork against the wall — always store them flat or in a dedicated mirror box, upright with padding.

For anything sensitive to temperature — wood furniture, electronics, documents, vinyl records — one of our climate-controlled units is worth the extra few dollars a month. The Santa Clarita Valley gets hot. Heat and humidity add up.

Label everything like you’ll forget everything

You will forget. Label every box with its contents and what room it came from. Then photograph the labels with your phone before you close the unit. A quick search through your camera roll beats digging through a stack of unmarked boxes.

Get the right lock

Standard padlocks are easy to cut. A disc lock or a shrouded shackle lock is significantly harder to defeat. Our units come with individual alarms, but a good lock is the first line of defense.
